2018 Standing Stone Half Marathon Weekend

Huntingdon County, PA. October 13-14, 2018

The Standing Stone Half Marathon and Festival is in rural Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. You will have a memorable experience completing our very challenging 13.1 mile course that winds through our historic town or one of our shorter distances. The Half Marathon & 5K starts in Knox Stadium on the campus of Juniata College and travels across campus and then through the streets of historic Huntingdon. The Half Marathon has a new trail section this year. The new course includes the flagpole hill and peace chapel trail system, taking runners directly past the flag pole, peace chapel and near Meditation point.

The Peace Chapel was designed in 1988 and constructed in 1989 by architect and sculptor Maya Lin, who also designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. The Elizabeth Evans Baker Peace Chapel, like many of Lin's designs, is remarkable in its simplicity, yet very powerful and moving.

The Peace Chapel consists of two main sites, one large and one small, with a series of 24 granite steps leading up a slope to the larger of the sites, which is situated at the center of an open field. The larger site, consisting of a 40-foot circle composed of 53 rough-cut, salt-and-pepper blocks of granite, accommodates groups of people in a spectacular setting overlooking surrounding mountains and forests. Each of the stones was hand picked by the artist from a Vermont quarry.

The second site, several hundred yards from the first, is located in a small grove of trees on a knoll slightly higher than the circle of stones. This element of the Peace Chapel consists of a single smooth granite disc, four feet in diameter, situated for individual, private meditation. The flagpole hill turn around will offer runners a spectacular fall view.

You can expect to see smiling and cheering spectators along the course. Music and cheerleading squads will also be stationed along the course to encourage runners and entertain spectators. Watch the race from any spot along the course or join others at one of our special designated cheer zones. We will have plenty of fluid stations along the course.

8K Start time: 8:00AM (Rails to Trails) Alexandria, PA.

Half Marathon & 5K start time: 10:15AM (Knox Stadium) Juniata College Huntingdon, PA.

WARNING: The half marathon & 5K courses are very challenging with plenty of uphill climbs and downhills on both road and trail surfaces. Please prepare accordingly.

Huntingdon, PA. is located approximately 30 miles south of State College, PA. (Penn State University).
